Why 2 vs 3 hours?

  • Within Schengen (e.g. Denmark, Spain, Germany): no passport control, so security is usually the only time-consuming step. ~2 hours is normally enough.
  • Outside Schengen (e.g. UK, USA, Asia): you also clear passport control after security, and that can be the real bottleneck. Allow ~3 hours.
  • With checked baggage: add time for check-in/bag drop on top — be there at the higher end.

It also depends on when you fly

The recommendations are built for daytime queues. Two things can change the picture:
