Passport Control at Copenhagen Airport: Wait Times, Schengen, and the New EES

The short answer
You only go through passport control at Copenhagen Airport (CPH) if you're travelling to or from a non-Schengen country (e.g. the UK, USA, Asia). For travel within Schengen there's no passport control. Passport control is after security and is often the real bottleneck for international departures β so allow extra time.

When do you need passport control?
- Within Schengen (Denmark, most of the EU, Norway, etc.): no passport control.
- Outside Schengen (UK, USA, Asia, etc.): yes β on both departure and arrival.
Because passport control comes after security, two queues can stack up for non-Schengen departures. That's why we recommend ~3 hours before a non-Schengen departure vs ~2 hours within Schengen. (How early should you arrive at CPH?)
What does the new EES mean?
The EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in force β it started in a phased roll-out on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It registers non-EU travellers digitally (face and fingerprints) instead of stamping passports, so non-Schengen travellers now complete a biometric step. Expect this to add time at passport control, especially at busy periods. (Note: EES is separate from ETIAS, the travel-authorisation scheme, which is not yet in force β expected later.)
Check the status before you travel: rollout and rules can change. The official, current information lives at Copenhagen Airport and the Danish authorities β always treat their guidance as definitive.
How to avoid surprises
- Travelling outside Schengen? Add time for passport control on top of security.
- Check the current wait for both security and passport control before you leave home.
- Have your passport/travel documents ready β now that EES is in force, non-Schengen travellers complete a biometric step.
